I think that's such a wonderful thing. There was actually a Grey's Anatomy episode last week that was about a transgendered person, it was very interesting and eye opening.
As far as leading the way goes, I don't know about that. Considering the recent election I'd say we have a long way to go when it comes to accepting and giving rights to people who differ from the norm
Sadly, I think you're right. Sometimes I wish people would find a way to open their minds long enough to realize that something else exists...
